ARTISTIC STATEMENT

The refurbishment of the Saint Kitts Electricity Company’s office building on Central Street, Basseterre, draws inspiration from the architectural character of the original structure while reimagining it for contemporary use. The concept seeks to preserve the historic presence of the building within the city’s fabric, maintaining its familiar identity while adapting it to modern operational and spatial demands.

Central to the design is the careful restoration and integration of the existing architecture, ensuring that its traditional forms, proportions, and material language remain visible and celebrated. These elements are complemented by the introduction of light-filled, flexible workspaces that prioritize efficiency, staff well-being, and environmental performance.

A defining feature of the refurbishment is the addition of a modernized wing above the proposed parking lot. This new extension is conceived as a bold yet respectful counterpoint to the restored structure — a contemporary intervention that expands capacity without diminishing the legacy of the original building. Through this interplay of old and new, the project embodies both continuity and progress, creating a workplace that honors the past while embracing the future.
